First day in Hong Kong

Freaking idiot. Trust me to get a boy racer pilot. Oh yeah, I bet he really enjoyed the sideways landing and tear-arsing around the tarmac like a loon. I hold him personally responsible for my backpack breaking thereby nearly causing me to lose my sleeping bag (admittedly a photo would help explain why this is).

I'm at the end of my first day here in HK. Before arriving, I knew less than nothing about this place. Really. I mean, is it a country, a city, a province or something else? What does it look like? What is it known for? I knew there are big buildings but I had no idea, for example, that between clusters of these buildings are beautiful mountains. I should have known that because on my list of things to do I'd jotted down "visit peak," which I now understand refers to the peak of one of these mountains.

The temperature and humidity smacked me rudely in the face when I exited the airport terminal. It was just another thing I knew I'd have to contend with. The list at that point in time included having to pay a $33 bus fair with a $500 note, having to manage my sleeping bag, and the man behind chewing his bloody gum in my bloody ear, arsehole! I'd had a long flight and couldn't sleep; I was forgivably irritable.

Finding my accommodation was 'OK' as is my room (except that it's windowless and I have ants).

Fighting off tiredness, I ventured over to Hong Kong island and "visited peak" which involved taking a ferry (the Star Ferry, also on my list), a bus then finally a tram to the top of a hill to absorb more breathtaking views. Incidentally, because of that, I now know where the owner of a Bugatti Veyron lives!!

The "security guard" at the top of Sky Tower (essentially a paved terrace where there's nothing to pinch) had evidently also just come off a long haul flight and was feeling irritable because he asked me twice not to sit on the ground. I told him to order in some more seats but, what the hell, what's the point arguing with someone who speaks no English.

The food here appears excellent yet cheap. A delicious plate of pork fillets, chicken bits on a skewer, fried egg and rice cost only £1.80! Despite the lovely lunch, I had MacD's for dinner. I know, I know.

It's late so I should sleep. I don't have an agenda for tomorrow but should be up early regardless.
