Great Barrier Reef

So the trip I booked was cancelled due to poor demand. But that meant I got a free upgrade to better trip on a bigger, badder boat! $219 worth of tour for $110. Bargain!

The weather couldn't have been better. Last week it was raining and yesterday it was cloudy, apparently, so I couldn't have got luckier!

I booked myself onto the 11:15am snorkel tour and the 2pm glass-bottom boat trip over the reef. The snorkel tour was an additional $30 to people who'd paid full-whack for this trip yet free to me because of the upgrade! This couldn't get better!

The snorkel tour was amazing. The guide took us over some coral and pointed out lots of interesting features. I need to read up on some of the things we saw because I was too in awe to fully take on board what he was saying. Despite being squeamish, I had no problem with fish swimming around me; the bigger they were, the more colourful and beautiful!

I made good use of the rented underwater camera. Although I could have taken hundreds of pictures, I only took 35. Taking pictures was tricky and I didn't want to spend the whole experience looking through the lens of a camera.

We'd sailed to Michaelmas Cay. Once we were done snorkeling, we could either relax on the beach or get a 'buggy boat' back to the big boat which was parked up (nautical term, obviously) a little way off the shore. I sat on the sand for a while then headed back for lunch. Oh, where I got told off for being in the restaurant area in my wet wetsuit - bah!

The glass-bottomed boat was particularly spectacular because it sailed much further out than I'd snorkeled: to places where the water was 15m deep. I took some pictures with my camera, preferring B&W with a red filter to colour. Tom will undoubtedly tell me if this was the right or wrong thing to do!

The trip back to Cairns was really relaxing with wine and live music. This day was so amazing. The Great Barrier Reef is something everyone should make time for in their life.
