Rainbow Bridge, Onsen and Maryn's tattoo

I met a new person this morning at my hotel: 23-year-old Maryn from Holland. She's been in Tokyo for a couple of days but seemed a little lost, as though she was looking to be invited out today. So I invited her.

We headed to Ginza and followed Jairo's basic instructions on how to get from the subway to his hotel. Take the only exit, he said. But there were several exits! And across the road where his hotel should have been there was another subway exit. This made no sense!

A little detective work showed we were in completely the wrong place. By the time we figured out where to go it was 11:30am. I was extremely apologetic and a little embarrassed, and I still don't know what made me think his hotel was in Ginza. But nobody really cared (I hope!). We just wanted a nice day!

We headed over to Rainbow Bridge and strolled across to Palette Town to something that looked a lot like New York City, complete with Statue of Liberty! Very odd! I really love this place.

We stopped for an all-you-can-eat buffet then figured out how to get to the natural spring (the 'onden') where we intended to spend the afternoon.

Suffice to say we were all visibly disappointed to discover the onden was closed. Very strange because my tourist booklet said it's open 22 hours per day, 324 days per year!

Wait... It wasn't closed. It just looked closed. Rock on!

Oh no! I couldn't help notice Maryn's big tattoo on her forearm. It read "my path is round" in some obscure language. Her decision to get a tattoo meant she was not allowed to go into the spa. It states clearly on the pamphlet: no tattooed persons allowed. The staff confirmed this by saying it's "about the only rule."

We sat in silence on the floor for a while. After talking to Jairo later, it transpired that he was waiting for me to suggest we should go in and leave Maryn behind. As cruel as that sounds, we had to. Maryn was, after all, a randomer and here we were in Tokyo. Nothing should get in our way.

Heartless? Maybe. Was the spa worth it? Yep!
